Illustrator Research - Howard Pyle

Howard Pyle was born in Wilmington, Delaware on March 5, 1853. At an early age he was exposed to many classic fairy tales, stories and famous English authors and decided to become an author and illustrator. His family saw his interests and send him to a school for the arts. After three years of training he set up a studio in his home town and began to draw and write his own stories. Every story he submitted to magazines was accepted, and at the age of twenty-five he was in demand as an illustrator. He published many children's story books about fairy tales, the story of King Arthur, the tale of Rodin Hood, battles from the Civil War, and pirates. He started teaching students in 1894 until 1905 but still offered criticism after he retired from teaching. His 120 students were known as the "Brandywine Tradition", and many of them became notable illustrators. He dies in 1911 in Italy from a serious kidney infection.
